A tribute to Jonny Ruffle
More than a year on, we still feel the absence of Jonny Ruffle, friend and supporter of the band. Jonny produced some of Leatherat’s videos, but more importantly, was a devoted supporter of two very different, but equally inspiring, charities: Let’s Play Project in Banbury, and Live PAWS in Tenerife. He gave his time, skills and heart to manage their marketing, PR and fundraising without expecting anything in return.
Jonny died suddenly from a heart attack in 2024, and since then, these charities have struggled to fill the gap he left. So Jonny’s friends and family have been determined to carry on his work, and to do it in a way that celebrates him, his generosity and his love of life’s little joys, like cartwheels and sunflowers.
That’s why on 6 September 2025, Bloxham’s Elephant and Castle will host Cartwheels and Sunflowers, a family-friendly local event that’s part celebration, part fundraiser and entirely in Jonny’s spirit. Leatherat, Barney Newman, Doozer McDooze and Andy Guttridge and more will help make it a day to remember.
But that’s not all! As part of the event, there’s a very special silent auction item: a signed ukulele, signed not only by Leatherat, but also by legendary folk-rock pioneers Fairport Convention. The winner will also receive the very last of our cider tin T-shirts.

This one-of-a-kind instrument isn’t just for music lovers — it’s a symbol of friendship, community and carrying on the good work that Jonny started. Whether you’re a folk music fan or just want to help change lives, this uke offers both. The charities your bids will support:
Let’s Play Project, creating fun, safe, and inclusive spaces for young people (aged 5–25) with additional needs in Banbury. From after-school clubs to holiday activities, they make sure every young person can belong, play and thrive.
Live PAWS, a no-kill, volunteer-led dog rescue in Tenerife, which saves and rehomes dogs abandoned or left homeless, with the help of devoted foster carers and vets. Jonny’s family live in Tenerife and volunteer with Live PAWS, making this charity especially close to their hearts.
How to get involved: come along to Cartwheels and Sunflowers for a day of joy, remembrance, and community spirit. Register your interest to bid for the ukulele, take part in the fun, and help keep Jonny’s passion for these causes alive. There is also a Just Giving page taking donations.
Jonny loved bringing people together for good — and with your help, his cartwheels will keep rolling and sunflowers will keep smiling.
